DCEU’s upcoming film Aquaman‘s cast is shaping up to be one hell of a cast. Reports are coming in that Dolph Lundgren has joined Jason Momoa, Nicole Kidman and Patrick Wilson for Aquaman! Lundgren will be playing Xebel native King Nereus.
From playing He-Man, Punisher and most recently Konstantin Kovar in Arrow, Lundgren is known very well in the comic book community. He is also known for action films like such as the Expendables franchise and Rocky IV.
Nereus made his comic debut in the amazing Death of a King arc in the New 52 series Aquaman – click here for the review. The arc takes place right after the crossover with Justice League in Throne of Atlantis. Xebel is one of the few ocean kingdoms that still stands (relatively), the others being Atlantis and The Trench. Mera, a Xebelian by origin, encounters Nereus and his army where it is revealed that she was promised to him before she left to be with Arthur Curry AKA Aquaman. When Atlan, previous King of Atlantis, returned, Nereus submitted himself and his army to Atlan and aided him in this takeover of Atlantis. I have always thought that Death of a King is the perfect arc for this Aquman film to take inspiration from – see my list here. This casting hints that some elements of this arc will be involved in the film which is just excited to think about!
The James Wan directed film is getting ready to start shooting next month so expect some set pictures to be revealed in the next few months. Currently, it is reported that Orm (Patrick Wilson) will be the primary antagonist for the film but it could be that they are going to build up their relationship before the climatic brother-brother clash for the throne. Amber Heard, who is seen in the recent Justice League trailer, will also reprise her role as Mera in the film together with Willem Dafoe who will be playing Atlantis advisor Vulko. Other cast members are Nicole Kidman as Queen Atlanna, Temuera Morrison as Thomas Curry and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as archenemy Black Manta.
Aquaman is scheduled for release on December 21, 2018.
