Warner Bros. Home Animation and DC Entertainment have released the first Justice League Dark trailer. Justice League Dark will be the 27th film in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies (DCAOM) which will showcase the more mystical side of the the DC Universe. Directed by Jay Oliva, the film has been confirmed to be rated ‘R’ upon its release.
Set for an early 2017 release, Justice League Dark will star Batman (Jason O’Mara), John Constantine (Matt Ryan), Zatanna (Camilla Luddington), Deadman (Nicholas Turturro), Etrigan (Ray Chase) and Swamp Thing (Roger R. Cross). O’Mara, who currently stars in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D., has garnered critical acclaim for voicing the Dark Knight is prior DC films which would confirm that JLD will be set in the post-flashpoint universe unlike the recently released film The Killing Joke. Furthermore, the trailer hints that the movie would feature the currently Justice League with the addition of John Stewart. The latter would hint that a Green Lantern animated film is on its way which would account for Hal’s absence in this film.
The trailer clearly shows that this film will be taking a very different tone than the previous additions primarily due to the avid use of magic. Aesthetically, the animation side’s seems rather promising that would certainly invoke interest even in those that have yet to read about this team since their debut in the New 52 series of the same name. While this animated venture is not as interesting as a live action adaptation, it does look like it would be a great movie!
The film was initially set for a live-action adaptation in the ever-growing DCEU but the project has been sidelined for undisclosed reasons with the most recent update putting director Doug Liman to helm the film should it come to light. In the meantime, we can enjoy the animated adaptation!
