Logan marks the end of an era.
Fox has released the first full trailer of the upcoming X-Men film Logan. While it has been known for quite a while that this final addition of the trilogy would be based off Old Man Logan, the trailer hints at a much darker film than we could ever imagine.
The aged Professor X and Wolverine makes it clear that Logan takes place in a much distant future than we last saw them in Days of Future Past. James Mangold, director of this highly anticipated film, saw this “as an opportunity” to address “the questions of ageing, of loneliness, of where I belong. Am I still useful to the world?” The director went on to note the characters of Logan will find themselves in “circumstances that are a little more real” and “what happens when you’re in retirement and that career is over” for the mutants.
Unlike most of the previous X-men films, Logan appears to be taking a much different tone, a much darker one. Deadpool made headlines early this year with its unconventional direction and it seems that Fox Studios is intent on exploring new elements much like the superior counterparts.
For years many fans have theorized how Wolverine will in continue given Hugh Jackman’s age. One popular theory is finally confirmed in this trailer – that X-23 will be taking Logan’s place in this universe. While interesting, the issue of the timeline does make it unlikely that Laure Kinney (X-23) will meet our new team that was introduce in X-Men: Apocalypse. This is one of the biggest problems in the Fox’s X-men universe – their films do not seem well connected with each other unlike the MCU and DCEU. As more films are being released, I do hope that Fox will establish a proper timeline.
Logan opens in theaters on March 3, 2017. In the meantime, check out the trailer below:
