The Suicide Squad sequel has met with quite a number of stumbling blocks since its announcement back in 2016. However, it appears that the project has found with footing with the announcement that The Accountant director Gavin O’Connor will helm the highly anticipated sequel.
David Ayer left the project to focus the spin-off film Gotham City Sirens, which will follow Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Poison Ivy and Selina Kyle AKA Catwoman. Recent news has hinted that despite being fast tracked, the sequel will hit theaters only in 2019 due to Will Smith’s schedule (working with Disney in the live-action Aladdin movie).
O’Connor is known for his work on The Accountant, Warrior, and Pride and Glory. Ben Affleck’s performance in The Accountant has be hailed by many fans of the DCEU, which is makes it no surprise that most of them are behind this choice for a director. A significant lot still can’t seem to move past the tragedy that was Suicide Squad. With O’Connor to helm the project, there is some hope that this sequel could potentially reaffirm the strength of this franchise and increase interest towards DCEU films.
Warner Bros. was reported looking at Mel Gibson, riding off his success from Hacksaw Ridge, and Jaume Collet-Serra, who is now directing Jungle Cruise, to helm the sequel. While both these directors are great, O’Connor’s work on The Accountant is sure to draw more attention especially if he uses a similar style in this upcoming sequel which he will also be writing.
Suicide Squad 2 is set for release sometime in 2019.
