The DCEU’s upcoming Batman film is probably one of the most highly anticipated films of this new generation of comic book films. Despite negative responses from fans regarding Ben Affleck’s Batman’s use of guns, it is undeniable that this new rendition of the caped crusader is probably the closest and darkest Batman we have gotten. With Matt Reeves, known for his work in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Cloverfield, directing the project as well as the confirmed casting of Joe Manganiello as deadly mercenary assassin Deathstroke AKA Slade Wilson, there is a lot to be excited for. It appears that another Batman villain may be making his way to Gotham – Josh Gad as The Penguin.
In a random ambiguous tweet which caught every off guard, Josh Gad, known for roles in Frozen and Beauty and the Beast, seemingly hinted that he might be playing crime lord Penguin in the DCEU. Fans have since dug through his account and revealed that he has followed Matt Reeves and Geoff Johns, both of whom are very close to the project. Even if it is true that he will be playing the iconic Batman villain, it is unclear if he will portray the character in the Batman. With both Gotham City Sirens, Nightwing and Batgirl films confirmed, it is very likely that he could make his debut in any of those films.
Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot AKA The Penguin made his first appearance in Batman title Detective Comics #58 way back in December 1941. Since then, he has evolved to be one of Batman’s more iconic enemies and is widely known as a supervillain in the DC Universe. Introduced by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, The Penguin is an eccentric criminal mastermind, known as much for his love of ornithology and trick umbrellas as for his already shady business dealings. Gotham City’s popular Iceberg Lounge serves as Penguin’s front for a number of illegal financial stature; the Penguin is a wily foe whose umbrellas conceal a variety of deadly weapons and gadgets. Despite his look, the Penguin is one of the entire DC Universe’s more realistic characters which makes his presence in the DCEU very logically given the direction they are taking with this universe.
At this point, we can only speculate and wait for an official announcement from Warner Bros.
In the meantime, the DCEU’s next film Wonder Woman is set to hit theaters in less than a month on June 2, 2017.
