Following the commercial success of last summer’s Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. is moving forward with the sequel and a couple of spin offs. David Ayer was supposedly set to return as the director for the Suicide Squad sequel but it seems WB is looking towards a different direction. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Mel Gibson, a legendary and world renowned actor and director, is in talks to helm the project. It should be noted that no official statement has confirmed this news yet so it’s still very much a rumor – so take it lightly. Regardless, it is safe to say this wasn’t something anyone would have guessed given the things Gibson has said about superhero films.
The report claims that while Gibson is familiarizing himself with the source material, WB is still looking at other directors, with Daniel Espinosa in mix. Given the largely negative critical reception the first film received, it is no surprise that WB is looking to replace Ayer. That said, Ayer has redeemed himself in the eyes of most fans after he posted his thoughts on the film in a response to one of his followers on twitter last month.
Despite the lack luster response from critics, Suicide Squad made a whooping $745 million worldwide at the box office. Given the popularity of the DC characters, namely Harley Quinn, Deadshot and Amanda Waller, coupled with the all-star cast that includes Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto and the incredibly talented Viola Davis, it is no surprise that WB decided to put the sequel on the fast-track.
Even if Ayer is dropped from Suicide Squad 2, he is still developing Gotham City Sirens, which will star Margot Robbie as the psychotic bat swinging jester Harley Quinn. It is rumored that Catwoman and Poison Ivy will complete the group, but that is not confirmed just yet.
Last year, Gibson made startling comments about superhero films in general which is the main reason why this rumor comes as a shock to many people.
The fact that Gibson is actually considering joining the DC franchise could mean that there could be something about the film that entices him. He is being honored to receive the Director of the Year Award at L.A. Italia Fest for his work in the critically acclaimed Hacksaw Ridge, a film that received 6 Oscar nominations – one of which is for Mel Gibson as Best Director.
Suicide Squad 2 is expected to hit theaters sometime in 2019 or maybe 2018 if everything goes smoothly.
