Revenge of the fans is reporting new details regarding the characters for the upcoming 'Birds of Prey' movie.
- Black Canary (Smolett-Bell) is a singer who fights crime at night.
- Huntress (Winstead) was a killer for Black Mask right up until discovering that he killed her family. So now she’s hunting him down.
- Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) is trying to move on from The Joker (who is referenced, but not seen).
- Renee Montoya, on the other hand, is on Huntress and Black Canary’s trail because of the body count they’ve amassed.
The reported incident that brings the team together is the kidnapping of Cassandra Cain, known by most DC comic book readers as Batgirl. Black Mask desires the skills that Cassandra has exhibited following her tragic upbringing, similar to that of X-23 in 2017's 'Logan'. Black Mask wants to groom her into the "Perfect Assassin", hoping that she will fill the spot that Huntress left when she deserted him. It is further reported that like X-23, Cain will not have much dialogue and presented as a "tormented, yet silently deadly killer".
This is a tricky position for DC to be in, given that the last thing we need now is more bad press, and having striking comparisons between Cassandra Cain and X-23 doesn't exactly inspire confidence. X-23 was an iconic part of 'Logan'. It's one thing to be inspired by the character, and a whole nother to rip the character off. Thankfully, it's all speculation now.
Further reports state that the climax of the film will not surround rescuing the kid, as that would be done before the third act. Instead, we will see Black Mask and his men hunting down the Birds of Prey, which gives Huntress her chance for revenge. Much of the film will deal with the relationship/chemistry between Montoya and the masked vigilantes, and Harley Quinn.
Interesting enough, there are rumors about an "epic cameo" for the film. Revenge of the Fans promises to dig more into this for us.
'Birds of Prey' is scheduled for release on Feburary 7, 2020.
