It is official! Tom Hardy has been confirmed for the role as Eddie Brock AKA Venom in the upcoming Spider-Man spin-off film centering around Venom.
Directed by Ruben Fleischer, the Venom film is reportedly going to be a horror film rather than a typical superhero film – news that sparked interest in some fans, myself included.
Sony confirmed that they were moving forward with rebooting the Spider-Man franchise (again) a few months back, but with a twist. They have decided to focus on developing films around other Spider-Man characters such as Venom, Black Cat and Silver Sable while the main man, Peter Parker, is over in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – played by Tom Holland. Fans obviously did not react that well to this news as this would likely mean that Marvel Studios would not have access to these characters in the MCU and that these Sony films would likely not have a Spider-Man. The latter however is still up in the air, with rumors that Andrew Garfield is coming back to the role. Holland has stated that he wouldn’t mind reprising his role as Spider-Man in the Sony films.
Tom Hardy is a name that garners a lot of attention in the comic book community having won the hearts of fans in his portrayal of Bane in the Nolan Trilogy. With this casting, Hardy joins the group of actors that has moves between the two comic book titans, Marvel and DC. Securing such a high profile actor, especially for a very dark film which Hardy clearly excels at, would certainly improve fan excitement for the film and brings in the viewers.
Venom is known predominantly as Spider-Man’s nemesis. The symbiote has transitioned from being a supervillain to becoming more of an antihero in recent years. Being a sentient alien primarily in liquid form, Venom requires a host to fully utilize his powers, much like the other symbiotes Carnage and Anti-venom. After bonding, the Symbiote endows its enhanced powers upon the host who refers to itself as Venom.
Production for “Venom” begins this fall and the film is scheduled for release in October 2018. In the meantime, Spider-Man: Homecoming will premiere in July 7, 2017.
