In an interview with Variety, Tom Holland has hinted at the possibility of reprising his role as Spider-Man in the Sony’s upcoming Marvel Universe.
With Spider-Man: Homecoming set for release this July and a sequel already planned out for 2019, there is a lot of excitement from the Spider-Man fan base. Last weeks announcement of the Venom film and that Sony plans to launch their own Marvel Universe starting with Venom has left fans puzzled as to how this will work. From rumors of them looking towards getting back Andrew Garfield for the role to not having a Spider-Man in the universe, we are all curious as to how this will work out.
During the interview, Holland spoke mainly about his preparation for the role and some fun facts about the film – like he was the one that joking suggested to go undercover in a high school to see what it’s like. While all the other responses were interesting, it was his response to the question about the Sony Spider-Man spin off films that really got our attention.
Sony has plans to expand the Spider-Man universe with several spinoff films. Will you appear in “Venom” or “Black Cat”?
I have no idea. I haven’t read a script. I haven’t seen any sort of concept art, so that would be something I would decide on when I see material.
Now of course this doesn’t really say much and we should take this lightly, but it does hint at the possibilities of him joining the films, maybe in a lesser capacity. It could also just be a generic response so don’t read too much into it. It’s just fun to entertain the possibility.
The problem with having these Sony films set in the MCU however, is that they have to ensure that the stories don’t contradict the MCU films. Having Sony create the films could give the MCU the opportunity to launch 4-5 films under their brand but is that too much? Probably. 3 is the sweet spot for most of us fans, especially with the FOX’s Marvel Universe as well as the DCEU, who is looking to expand to a Dark Universe as well.
Right now things seem odd and confusing with regards to the Sony Marvel Universe. That said, if they can bring a unique direction towards superhero films, I’m all for giving it a chance.
Spider-Man: Homecoming will hit theaters on July 7, 2017.
