Coming at no surprise, Sony has revealed that they intend to launch their own Marvel Universe which will kick off in October 2018 with their solo Venom film.
Following Spider-Man’s (Tom Holland) entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in last year’s Captain America: Civil War, we have been curious if the other spider-man properties will make their way into the MCU as well. It appears that Sony will be keeping the rights to those characters and making their own Spider-Man universe that doesn’t include the web slinging hero – odd ain’t it? With recent reports that Sony is planning a Black Cat and Silver Sable film, it seems that they are very dedicated to this and would hint that they have a lot of faith in the Venom film.
This news didn’t sit particularly well with most fans. Having 2 marvel universes is already a stretch but 3? That would just be too much. While it would be great to see these characters immortalized in the big screen, creating a Spider-Man universe without Spider-Man is just weird and frankly ridiculous. There are some rumors that the studio is looking to get Andrew Garfield back into the fold, but take this lightly.
As for the Venom film, reports are coming in that the film’s genre will be Action/Horror/Sci-fi which would likely indicate it will be a horror film. Unlikely the other news, this one is actually interesting. Venom is no doubt a scary and complex character, iconic in its own way. Having a horror superhero film will allow them to reach out to a different audience and give a different look at comic book characters. Should the DCEU have launched their Dark Universe, it is likely that Sony wouldn’t have launched this potential franchise. Hence, I’m a little worried about the DC’s dark universe. The Venom film is reported to be rated R which has got some fans really excited given that R-rated comic book films is gaining a lot of traction with fans.
Venom is scheduled for release on October 5, 2018.
